Frequently Asked Questions:
What is GFWL?
GFWL (Games For Windows Live) is Microsoft's discontinued game service which was used around 2007-2013. When GTA IV came out, GFWL was the official multiplayer service. It is the main thing we use to play multiplayer. Since GFWL is still being the best way to play GTA IV multiplayer even in 2022, there is no reason to play on the mod called GTA Connected which emulates GFWL in a way that destroys the original feeling and nostalgia.
It's asking for a key. Where can I get one?
We had some working keys in #gfwl-keys channel back in old days, but now we ran out of keys and we're stuck to a *.reg file which allows us to use a used key unlimited times. However, the solution is not permanent hence you need to install the *.reg file again every time you restart your PC. There is an *.asi file that I've made which installs the *.reg file automatically every time you launch GTA IV. However, you won't be able to auto-sign in. You can download the *.asi file from here: <https://bit.ly/GFWLRegistry>.
Does anyone want to play GTAC?
No lol. Take a look at GFWL. If you don't want to play on GFWL just because of its (non-existent) bugs; I can only say that this server is not for GTA Connected, IV:MP or CitizenIV:MP, as the description and even the name of the server suggests.
It says "Unable to connect to game session." or "Unable to join a game you were kicked from." when I try to join my friend(s).
This is a bug named "kickbug" which prevents you from joining to specific people. The cause is unknown. To fix this, you need to forward ports 80, 88 and 3074 (in both TCP and UDP). More information and tutorial about port-forwarding can be found here: <https://bit.ly/2YzYKMv>. If you can't open ports, your modem IP may be in CGNAT (Carrier-grade Network Address Translation) which prevents you from opening ports. To check if your modem is in CGN, open PowerShell as administrator, type `tracert <Your Public IP>` (You can find your public IP from here: <https://www.whatismyip.com/>) and press Enter. If the output is longer than 1 line, your modem IP is in CGNAT (Example: <https://imgur.com/a/PulVhj1>). You can contact to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to remove your modem IP from CGNAT.
Why GFWL? Why not GTA Connected?
GFWL (Games For Windows Live) was the official multiplayer service used back in 2010s. It's not that bad unlike how people in GTA Connected community say, because most of the bugs have been fixed since then. There are only few bugs in GFWL, but lots of good features (such as directly joining to friends, adding friends, etc). GFWL is peer-2-peer, meaning you won't have lag if you're not living near the server. Plus, there are regular events. Furthermore, I personally don't like how different GTA Connected is compared to GFWL. There are custom servers, custom scripts for custom menus and custom gameplay in GTA Connected. I would prefer the original.
Is it possible to earn GFWL achievements?
Yup! Click here to learn how.
DLCs (TBoGT and TLAD) are not showing up.
Make sure you have `dsound.dll` and `GFWLDLC.asi` in your GTA IV directory. If not, you can get them from #links. If you've done the above thing, ensure you also have `ZolikaPatch.asi`, `ZolikaPatch.ini` and `GFWLProtectionDisabler2019.asi` in your GTA IV directory, and `LoadDLCs` in `ZolikaPatch.ini` set to 1. If you have all of above files in your GTA IV directory, check whether you're signed in and connected to GFWL or not. You may need to be signed in for DLCs to show up in some cases.
It's showing VRAM as less than 250MBs & I can't change graphics settings & game is stuck at loading screen & textures are missing everywhere.
Create a text document named `commandline` in GTA IV directory and type `-norestrictions -nomemrestrict -availablevidmem 20.0` (if you're on Patch 8, replace `-availablevidmem 20.0` with `-availablevidmem 2048.0`) in it, then save.
GFWL is stuck on "Please wait..." screen after I signed in.
Be patient. It takes about 5-10 minutes depending on the age of your account.
Does this method work with cracked GTA IV?
We do not support piracy on GTRF, you'll have to find out this information elsewhere.
Does this method work for Rockstar Games Launcher version of GTA IV?
Yes it works. Just move your game folder temporarily from `C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV` or wherever you've installed the game to your desktop before downgrading. You can put it back to its original place after the downgrade.
It's saying that I need to sign-in to Rockstar Games Social Club when I try to go into multiplayer.
Your antivirus may have deleted `ZolikaPatch.asi` from your game directory while downgrading the game. Even though it's not malicious, some antiviruses detect ZolikaPatch as a virus and delete. You need to make an exception for GTA IV folder in your antivirus settings then get `ZolikaPatch.asi` from `IV & DLC Downgrade 3.4.1\shared\install` folder (where you extracted the downgrader previously).
A command prompt window pops-up and instantly closes when I try to downgrade the radio.
Your GTA IV folder's write permission for user level might be disabled which can cause the radio downgrader to instantly close without downgrading. In other words, the radio downgrader might be failing to overwrite the GTA IV files. To fix this, try moving your GTA IV to your desktop temporarily before attempting to downgrade the radio.
It says "You have been disconnected because your computer is running too slowly" when I Alt+Tab/minimize GTA IV.
This is because GTA IV freezes when it loses focus, therefore GTA IV thinks your computer is running too slowly so it disconnects you to prevent unexpected behavior in the multiplayer lobby (as GTA IV is peer-2-peer). To fix this, set `BorderlessWindowed` and `DoNotPauseOnMinimize` to 1 in `ZolikaPatch.ini`, and add `-windowed` to `commandline.txt` file (if you don't have one, create one).
Zolika1351's trainer doesn't work in GFWL multiplayer. What should I do?
Simply download the trainer from GTAinside instead of GTAForums. Link: <https://www.gtainside.com/en/gta4/trainers/140593-zolika1351-s-trainer-15-0-rewritten>
I'm getting "SecuLauncher: failed to start application [2000]" error.
Install Visual C++ 2005 x86 Redistributable from #links. If that doesn't fix the problem, simply run PlayGTAIV.exe (or LaunchGTAIV.exe) as administrator.
It's asking me for a SecuROM activation key right after I run LaunchGTAIV.exe.
Delete LaunchGTAIV.exe and downgrade the game again using "IV & DLC Downgrade 3.4.1.zip" in #tutorial (skip the radio downgrader).
